Iran Ranks Fourth in Sponge Iron Production

TEHRAN Iran ranked fourth after Mexico, India and Venezuela last year in the production of sponge iron with an output of 4.1 million tons, according to Isfahan Mobarakeh Steel Mills Complex's weekly publication.
According to the weekly, the complex stood first in the country last year with production at 2,618,000 tons of sponge iron.
The world's total sponge iron production stood at more than 38.6 million tons in 1999, up 4.2 percent from the figures for 1998.
By March 2001, Mobarakeh Steel Mills Complex is expected to produce 2.8 million tons of products.
During March-July, the complex exported 173 million tons of its products, worth more than $42 million .
